The Library

This afternoon I went to the Classics Department to have a look around. I still need to go to the office (as it is only open in the morning) to introduce myself to the staff there.

So I headed down to the library. I met some of the staff from the Department and the Library. I was given a tour and the collection looks amazing. It is all catalogued really carefully and is amazingly extensive. I can’t wait to get started!

And I have a office! There is a large communal office with multiple desks for Graduate students but I have a separate office. It is in the same room but cordoned off with a door. I have a key for it!

Even better was the sign on the door which said Professor… I’d forgotten that the usual American policy at University is to refer to teaching/research faculty as Professor. It was rather nice 🙂 I’m planning on getting a picture of it, and some of the office and the library.

I also have an ID card for the University now and I got the Gym membership. I’m planning on going for a swim tomorrow. The leisure pool section looks lovely – it has a hot tub!

Supermarket Adventures

Armed with directions I ventured out to go to the supermarket. It is only a few minutes away so very convenient.

I hadn’t made a list but had an idea of what staples I wanted to pick up. The fresh produce section is small-ish but quite comprehensive. I got some salad stuff and then headed into the aisles to see what I could find.
Hmm, well it was certainly interesting. I gave up after a while trying to find rice cakes or noodles. I’m sure they were there somewhere. What I did find was an astronomical amount of processed food and pure junk. The amount of it was shocking. The sheer space devoted to that stuff completely dwarfed the healthier options.
What was most shocking was the difference in prices. Buying healthier food was more expensive, but the junk wasn’t just cheaper. It was exceptionally cheap. Plain chicken breasts were about $7 for six portions, but processed chicken burger/marinated cheese fillets were about half the cost.
I’m planning on going back later in the week and having a more thorough look around the shelves but I’ve got some good stuff in for the next week or so.
But when I reached the last couple of aisles this was the display that greeted me.

An Extra Note
I accidently left a carrier bag behind and didn’t notice until later this afternoon. I was quite annoyed as there was quite a bit in the missing bag (lord knows how I missed it when I was unpacking everything).

Anyway I headed back and they had the bag at the customer service desk. They had even taken the raw chicken out the bag and let me grab a new pack.

In future I’ll keep an eye on the packer to make sure he puts everything into my trolley once he’s packed it.

Into the City

I got up at 8am, and played with the coffee maker in the bathroom. It was a proper filter one. And very nice too.

I headed back to the airport and got a Shuttle into the University for just $20. Not too bad, and certainly much cheaper than a taxi. It didn’t take too long and I got a good view of Covington in Kentucky and the Downtown area.
The apartment is really nice, rather spacious – more so than I expected. The place was pretty clean but I ended up giving everything a wipe over. There was some stuff left in the dishwasher than still had a bit of debris attached so I ended up washing most of the kitchen stuff. Probably a lot of it was okay but I’m more comfortable using it now.
After lunch I got a sim card but it didn’t work in the UK phone, so I picked up a cheap handset for use over here. It is quite a nice phone so I’ll hang on to it. I know that Mum is having a few problems with messages getting through but I don’t think we’ll be communicating via text very often.

Holiday Inn

The hotel is rather nice. And the WiFi is free 🙂 Room is huge, and I have a King-Size bed! It is wider than I am tall.

Timmy decided to help show how big the bed was.

The restaurant was open so got some nice dinner too, Salmon Salad – yum!

The pool looks nice, but there were some families in so I figure I may have a swim in the morning to help wake up. I went for a little wander outside the hotel (just around the car park).

I was looking at the car number plates as they say which state the car is from. There was one from Alaska! Plus Kentucky plates have a silly slogan… “Kentucky… Unbridled Spirit”! Also the silliest personalised number plate, “Setil it”.

And best of all… it is sunny and warm 🙂
