The Underground Railway Center

Today I went to the museum about the Underground Railway. It is in a rather fabulous building down by the waterfront. The museum is larger than I expected and is well laid out. They give you an audio tour to listen to as you go around the museum.

The centrepiece of the main floor has an entire original slave pen which was preserved in barn over the years before it was excavated and reconstructed in the museum. It was quite small to start with, but imagining 75plus people inside it was hard to believe. (They don’t allow pictures within the museum but there is a picture of the slave pen on Wikipedia).
I’m glad I went. I can’t say that it was an enjoyable museum given the subject matter but it was interesting and sobering.
I picked up this book for you, and this is some information about the author of it.
There was a little bit of humour though, you can buy Barack Obama finger puppets! (Link!)
